'Our community is very fortunate to have young people such as you to serve as excellent role models for those even younger.'
- Barry Porter, Cooperative Christian Ministries, 2007
Philosophy
Our camps are grounded in the belief that a child's potential should not be hindered by money. Because of this, any child can attend a Kicking4Hunger camp. Instead of an admission or registration fee, we simply encourage each camper to bring in a canned good donation for each day of camp. The food that we raise is then redirected to assist local food banks.
In addition to raising food for the hungry, we focus on providing a fun based environment for children to embrace the game of soccer. This setting is only successful as a result of the student leaders who mentor and work with the kids at each camp. We work with campers of all levels to develop their fundamental skills, so that they may use these skills to help build a broader understanding and love of the game of soccer.
In addition to providing quality soccer instruction, we are also dedicated to educating youth on the value of living healthy lifestyles. Specifically, we emphasize the importance of exercise, good nutrition, and healthy living habits. We accomplish this by means of verbal instruction as well as providing children with various materials that they can refer to.
The Program
Even though we offer different types of programs, each program has the same goal in mind: to fight hunger, empower individuals, and build communities.
Camp Model: The Team Approach
These camps generally last anywhere from 3 to 4 days, and usually occur during the summer. The age range includes ages 5-11, as well as 11-14, depending on the particular event. Since it is during the summer, camps generally run in the morning from 9AM to 12PM. Activities during the camp usually consist of developing basic and fundamental soccer skills early in the week, so that the campers can build up their confidence levels to display in the league tournament at the culmination of the camp.
The idea here is that each child will not only learn practical skills, but will also learn how to apply these skills in a competitive environment where teamwork is crucial for success.
Clinic Model: The Individual Approach
Clinics normally run 1 to 3 days, and usually occur during the school year. The age range is similar to the Camp Model, depending on each particular clinic. These events can occur during the week after school hours, or on the weekend as well. Activities during clinics are focused on developing and improving fundamental soccer skills, including (but not limited to) passing, trapping, dribbling, and shooting.
Whether they are competing with their soccer team, or simply playing in the backyard, the skills that campers develop with us will be evident in their own individual performances anywhere they play.
